As I travel around the internet visiting, I have come across so many really nice blogs with great designs and wonderful content. I have also noticed that there are numerous blogs that do not have a favicon and I wondered why so many were without this.

So I was inspired to write this quick post so that I could share a fast and easy way to remedy this without even having to tinker with your blog’s code.

I can hear some ask, what is a favicon?

A favicon is that little graphic that is displayed next to the URL in a browser’s address bar and page tabs. It displays a logo or other symbol related to the actual web site, and serves as yet another means of branding.

Some blog themes comes with this feature, like premium themes, while many do not, leaving you with a blank page graphic as a favicon.

Now to complete the task you will need a tool. It is free so no worries there.

Go to MaxBlogPress and download the Favicon plugin. After arriving be certain to bookmark or otherwise keep the page open so that you can refer back to it for reference. There are details related to the plugin there.

Pictured on that page you will see the following image which shows the 80 favicon graphics the plugin comes with, none of which you are likely to be interested in. Then again… who knows.

You will likely want a custom image. The actual image for this will need to be in the range of a 16 x 16 pixel to no larger than a 64 x 64 pixel square.

Scrolling further down the page you can find the download button to get the plugin.

I have had this for quite some time and did not see a registration button on the current page, but I am certain that you will need to register this from within your admin panel upon activation.

After the download, this file will need to be unzipped and the folder uploaded to your plugins folder on your server. If this is above your skill level have a tech do this for you or you may contact me for additional assitance.

Once you have this plugin installed and activated this becomes a simple point and click exercise.

My point is this, favicons are the missing touch on your wonderful blog if you do not have one. This small but important feature is often overlooked and I thought I would point you toward the fastest, easiest way of installing one if you have the need.

    Hi Jimi,

I must admit yours is looking great here :)

  4. Hey Jimi, I love favicons and the little recognizability that they give in a firefox browser full of tabs. I spent hours getting mine to work and, if nothing else, I can find my admin tab easier.

      Hey Justin.
There was a time when these had to be coded in, but there is an easier way now, which really helps those who are unfamiliar with coding.

Your last post title has caught my eye, have to check that out. :-)

Thanks for this reminder Jimi. I had forgotten to change my favicon since creating my new logo last week.
I am using the S. Simple Favicon WP Plug In, which is also free. They even offer a way to have your favicon image hosted offsite and just link to it. I found this much easier than uploading through my FTP (which I have yet to master.) :)

      Hi Patty,
that plugin sounds pretty nice and removes one step from the process. That is very good feedback that provides another option.

When I moved to this site I was a few days getting mine up as well, so it is easily overlooked. Probably best to make this one of the first things we do on a new blog site.

      Thanks for that feedback!

  10. I’m thinking about changing my “Z” to a photo, but haven’t got around that yet. But you are absolutely right, favicon is little, yet important thing to have. And making one isn’t that hard in the end, even without a plugin.

  12. Jimi,

I had no idea there were WordPress plugins to create favicons!

I’ve been using the Favicon Generator from Dynamic Drive for a couple years now. You upload your image, they resize and create the correct file type for you to download then FTP to your site. Takes about 2 minutes in all. http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/

While the plugin sounds really cool, especially for folks who don’t know how to ftp, I think I’ll stick with the generator… one less plugin to worry about updating. haha

I have a generic one up on my sites and don’t even recall how I did it. I’ll check out this plug-in so I’m ready when I make my custom image.

I agree with Gordie, it does look a bit amateurish to not have one but will add it only looks amateurish if your blogging for more than just fun.

  24. We said, Nike Air force , is the air force 1, this is a very classic shoes, in fact, is the first basketball shoe, but now many people regard it as a trend to wear shoes, air force does not contain a dunk series, air force 1 Nike air force shoes of the hind paw with air max air cushion, and this is his only technical, but the air force by air force 1 shoes the classic shape of a large number of shoe lovers around the world welcomed more than 20 years, consistently.

  25. It is the little touches that make a big difference, Jimi. I made my favicon at http://www.favicon.cc. Very simple interface with a 16×16 pixel grid. Simply “plop” your color in each pixel and then save. Of course, you have to upload the image to your blog, but that is easy to do. Thanks for another option, though. I will check it out.

  26. Jimi Jones says:

    Hi Sherrie.

Thanks for sharing that site, I was not aware of that one. Seems to have a really nice interface for creating the image. This provides another nice way to get the job done. :-)
    Good looking out.
