Computer Glitches – Weirdness in Wonderland

by Jimi Jones

Any user of computers can tell you stories of the unexplained, those weird happenings that occur without warning or explanation. Those computer glitches that come from, well who knows where? It is as if the machine had developed a mind of it’s own, and sometimes I wonder.

A couple of days ago for some strange reason and from out of nowhere, this blog began to place all of the comments in moderation, although I allow readers to post their comments freely.

Confused, I went into the dashboard discussion area to see if the settings had somehow magically changed. Finding that they had not, I logged out and shut down my system completely (hard boot) as opposed to performing a simple reboot.

Of course by now I am having thoughts of something amiss on the server, or perhaps I have been hacked, you know, the usual paranoia that sets in when there is something out of the ordinary going on with your site and you cannot explain it. :-)

So anyhow, I restart and get back to my work, as I was working on a new resource page for this blog (coming soon BTW). Sometime later while scanning my Blackberry’s mail accounts I see an email from Wordpress indicating that I need to moderate my comments. Now was this from the previous weird occurrence or is this a new and accurate notice?

Back in the dashboard, I find two comments from regular readers here that are awaiting moderation. Now I am really confused (as if I needed help with that) and wonder what the heck is going on.

Looking into the discussion settings panel yet again, I find that the checkbox “A comment is held for moderation” is checked. It is about now that my ole pal Rod Serling and his long running Twilight Zone TV show come to mind because I knew I had not made that selection. So after deselecting and saving the settings, I waited for the next comment to come in.

When that did occur it was my good friend Ileane from Ms. Ileane Speaks and all was functioning as expected and has continued to date.

As they say, “alls well that ends well”, but I never figured that one out or understood why it occurred, which bugs an old techie like me. :-)

So I thought I would have a little Friday fun with this and ask you about your weirdness your computer’s weird and unexplained happenings. LOL

Do you have some odd and strange computer related occurrence that you can recall and would like to share?

  • Jimi, the 2.9 upgrade went relatively smoothly for me but I know there were several problems experienced by others - Erica for example. The 2,9 upgrade screwed my ability to schedule posts but 2.9.1 fixed that. As I said to Erica, to err is human but to totally screw things up requires a computer!

  • This is good feedback, Kevin. I still have a few other sites to upgrade but will be sure that I am upgrading to 2.9.1 or above.

  • That's a good point you mention. I did not experience this until after the upgrade, although I could not place it there for sure but it makes me wonder. I held off updating another blog and it has performed just fine.

  • I had some issues last week that I posted about, but now that you mention the comment issue I too was noticing some of my regulars going into moderation. Hmm maybe it had something to do with the 2.9 upgrade?

I had intermittent sound card problems since upgrading to Windows 7 X64, my microphone gets feedback buzzing on the USB port that didn't happen in Vista 64.

For wordpress, sometimes I schedule a post and "publish" or "update" and it doesn't take, I go to dashboard and even though it acted like the action took, it doesn't. Sometimes when I publish posts, even though I filled out the keywords, they are blank, like it saved the post but forgot to write the keywords to database. These crop up occasionally.

  • The publish / update deal sounds familiar. Had a similar problem once and had to deactivate a plugin while updating, then reactivate afterwards. This went on until an update came out for it. At times, it even caused me to have to login to the admin again.
Cannot remember just now which plugin it was, but if you have that again, you may want to deactivate them one by one to try to isolate the offender. Once updated, the problem went away.

These blogs are like automobiles, so many parts that anything may go haywire at anytime. :-)

  • This is the life we live when it comes to PC's and Servers. I have seen some strange stuff in my time being a site admin of many popular websites.

I think the most frustrating aspect is it always happens when you least expect it or when you are strapped for time.

This is how life works I guess.

  • True that, Brian.
Always when you least expect it. I am sure you've seen your share handling all of those sites.
