Recharge the Batteries – How to Avoid Being Overwhelmed

by Jimi Jones

Building an online business can be a long and grueling journey at times, so much so, that you may wonder how in the world you will survive the onslaught of life’s interruptions and reach the level of success you envisioned when you began.

But it always comes down to what is important in your life and how you manage those things in conjunction with your goals. Sounds simple enough but that’s where the simplicity ends.

Nearly everyone has a similar story so one would think we humans had devised a means of mastering this problem by now. :-)

Well we haven’t mastered it but there are some things we can do to keep ourselves motivated and in the game.

Call a time out!

That’s right, take a short break and recharge those batteries that give you so much energy and determination to succeed in the first place. Mail it in for a day or two while you re-energize your mind and devise a new plan of attack.

I’m not saying drop your commitments and responsibilities, you’ll have to identify the right spot to do this but think ahead as to when you can pull this off.

Now do not misunderstand this for a bout with procrastination, because that is not at all what this is about. It’s about regaining your focus and clearing away the clutter that life has heaped upon you.

When things pile up and there seems to be no exit strategy you’ll have to make one, and that can be most difficult while on the field of battle. We should refuse to allow our energy levels to be drained to a point where everything becomes a chore. We must break the cycle and regain control.

Get Some Rest

Gee, this sounds so simple but often we avoid this and continue to press onward without a full complement of energy.

Depending on your business or job situation, this could be as little as a half-day to as much as several days, but the important thing is to schedule some down time so that you can relax and develop a plan to regain your stride.

Begin with an early night, call it off several hours before you normally would and grab a book, watch a movie or even go to sleep. Awaken with a healthy perspective and a clear mind so that you can map out you next course of action.

Do not rush back into the rat race that you have just taken a break from but rather; carefully and strategically plan the next steps for regaining and remaining in control.

Schedule Time to Catch-up

Having now broken the highly paced routine that got you into this situation in the first place, carefully schedule blocks of time to accomplish your tasks and avoid falling back into overdrive.

The reality is that you must catch up at some point, but not at the expense of burnout, which is way too much like a real job for anyone’s liking.

Consider the pace of your work recovery, to hell with break-neck speeds and all that comes with it. This is all just too unhealthy and has a fun factor of zero.

Delete the Unpleasant

Identify those situations that you deplore and delete them from your life by staying out of those situations. If your RSS reader has become unmanageable and you feel you can never get caught up with all of that reading, delete the crap and get it out of your life, get a fresh start and stay on top of it.

You’ve fallen way behind on your office filing, bring in a family member or hire someone to bail you out and be done with it.

Back on Top

When you really stop and evaluate the things that are draining your batteries and zapping your energy you will often find that there were better, more efficient ways of handling them.

Once you’ve gotten things back in order, stay on top by always looking for ways to keep your schedule clear of the unnecessary and unimportant.

It’s great to be on top of your game and hard work to stay there, but it’s even more difficult to maintain a controlled pace when things get out of hand.

Keep blogging!

Valuable post because I think a lot of bloggers can get so focused they loose track of the life they have/had outside of the blog.My release, during the season, is to go fly fishing. Living where I do I am surrounded by beautiful countryside and you can just stand by water and watch the shadows of clouds scudding across the high fells, there are buzzards, deer and wild otters – and the fish of course. I have just bartered letting a local web designer use some of my blog posts for free in exchange for two or three days on one of the best stretches of the local river. Five or six hours in that environment and I am a changed person.

    That really sounds great, Kevin.
My kind of environment. Getting out in the boonies is very relaxing and it does have that energizing affect. You made a fantastic barter, I'd say. :-)

I was out in the veggie garden pulling weeds and picking radishes and laughing to myself: Some friends think I'm chained to the computer relentlessly POUNDING on the internet. Well, yes we've all had those phases – but stepping back, chilling-out is the time when you decompress and re- & un-think — to learn to push SEO & Marketing levers more selectively and far more effectively after regrouping.

Isn't it fun!? Whenever I have moments of feeling I've totally HIT THE WALL, I use it as a backrest, regroup, and there I usually see a whole new wall I can't wait to dash up to! :)

Helpful article, thanks. I've switched over to bartering recently for most of anything I can get without having to shell out cash. There are a couple sites out thereto use, to connect with people who are looking to barter trade/swap items or even services (carpentry work for auto work, etc). One of the sites I use is Baarter – http://baarter.com

    Hi MacGadgetGal! :-)

Sorry I somehow missed your comment earlier.
Veggie gardening is one of my favorite hobbies and yes, it is very relaxing. It's really important to step back and renew your thoughts. I like that using the wall as a backrest. :-)

    Hi David.
Bartering is a great way to get things done without incurring out of pocket cash. I was unaware of the Baarter.com site, looks like a nice place to do some trades, etc.

Thanks for the info and thanks for visiting!

Thanks. Thought I'd get the word out. The economy isn't doing so well, folks could use a resource like that.
