Should a Blogger Outsource?

by Jimi Jones

Many bloggers consider themselves one-man shows, meaning they expect to remain in control of everything associated with their blogs. This is particularly true with new bloggers who are operating on a limited budget and will nearly always opt to perform all of the tasks themselves.

When certain tasks are above the blogger’s skill level, some will seek out how-to articles and attempt to get things done in that manner with mixed results. There are times when this leads to blog crippling errors and outside help may be needed to correct the problem and get back on track.

All of this simply leads to lost productivity and time. Bloggers have to know their limitations and solicit the help of others when appropriate.

Here is an example.

Let’s say that you wanted to install a nice image on your blog’s header and you are using the Thesis theme. For the blogger who is ambitious, they locate a nice tutorial online that lays out a step by step process for accomplishing the task. Although the blogger has no coding experience, the process looks easy enough so they have a go at it.

Somewhere in the process, and error is made, likely a typo, and the blog site is now inoperable. Panic sets in and the mad scramble is on to find a tech to correct the situation and get the site back up and running.

At this point, the panicked blogger will pay nearly any sum to correct this issue and get back to where they were before the error.

A technician is located, and they correct the error and get the site back to normal, with the new header image in place, all in the course of 15 minutes.

The cost for the service was relatively inexpensive, say $20. Was it really the best approach to attempt this with little or no experience or could the two hours of time lost during the entire process have been better utilized by concentrating on what the blogger does bets, write content?

Two hours, $20.00 and a panic attack later the blogger still has not written their next post.

The point is this, know your limitations and weigh your options. There are times when your time is better used for your own skills. Bloggers do not and should not be one-man operations. Know when to outsource and get help with things you may be somewhat unfamiliar with.

Why outsource?

Simply put, it saves you time and allows you to remain focused on what you do best, while moving toward you overall goal. No need to waste time and find yourself sidetracked in unfamiliar territory.

As a blogger, everything you do associated with blogging requires some level of skill. It is wise to determine the best use of your time and stay within that framework.

Do you think the highly successful A-list bloggers are spending time with tech issues when they could be working on the next product?

Time is more valuable than money because you can get more money, but you cannot get more time. There are 168 hours in each week and like money, he or she who spends most efficiently will see the most gain.

Being a blogger is not synonymous with being a technician. You are not required to be an auto mechanic in order to drive a car.

Many new bloggers will say that they cannot afford to hire a technician. Depending on the task, they cannot afford not to. If nothing else, seek out the help of friends and others who may provide the service free of charge.

So what about you, have you considered the need to outsource and what is your viewpoint?

Do you find it wise to hire someone else, or prefer to keep it all in-house?

If you are relatively new to blogging, you may not have had to consider this as yet, but someday you surely will. Just…

Keep Blogging!

  • Hello Yolanda.
"Jill of all Trades" I like that. :-)
There are many good reasons to outsource but if you are happy handling it all, by all means keep at it. Having a dependable and capable person to call on is critical.

I once did everything myself as well, but learned to outsource so at times so I can work on more critical projects.

    Thanks for visiting!

  • I like to consider myself a "Jill of all Trades" and unfortunately, I've learned the hard way that sometimes outsourcing can rear its ugly head in the form of uncompleted tasks, poor quality, etc.

When it comes to my blog, I'm involved with every nook and cranny 100%. I don't believe in outsourcing tasks in relation to my blog and in fact have found that when I learn to overcome an obstacle, it makes for a GREAT how-to blog post. :)
  • Hey, James.
That sound like a really nice arrangement that is working out for everyone. You all are smart to outsource when the workload becomes overwhelming.

  • I think its a good idea to outsource. If you can not do it or if you do not have the time to work on issues with your blog, website or businesses, then outsourcing can save you time and money. outsourcing leaves you time to do what you want to do and concentrate on your customers.

With our web design company, from time to time we will outsource to our contractors. But that is only if we can not complete the work due to work load or if it something we can not do. We have 3 trusted contractors we use, and they pretty much work under our company and are treated as an employee and when they work with the client they represent us.

  • If the matter is within my ability, yes I'll try to solve it my own; unless there's a limit of time and a much better place for me to focus my effort on then yes, outsourcing will be my option. :-) You're right about blogger not being the Mr./Ms Know-It-All. Gotta be smart knowing when to let go. ^^

  • Yeah, I'm that ambitious person who thinks I can do it all. I'm just too cheap - although I do know my limits - at least now, anyway. I've been favored (cause luck just can't cut it) - I haven't had to deal with fixing a major error - but I did spend a WHOLE ENTIRE Saturday redirecting my blog from Blogger to a self-hosted Wordpress blog. And yes, I was freaking out the whole time. But I made it through.
However, that said, I do see a need to upgrade to a custom theme in my future, but I'm a "don't-cross-that-bridge-til-I-get-there" kind of person, so we'll see how long things will hold steady.
No my fingers aren't crossed, but I am praying for the best! :)

  • Hey Keisha.
That redirect was a good move, always better to self host. I've had some of those hold-your-breath moments as well. :-)

Upgrading to a premium or custom theme will be a breeze for you when you get ready. If you need help or some advise when the time comes, give me a holler.

  • I am one of those who likes to drive the car and be able to fix it. For most things I want to be able to know how to fix them.

I have spent insane amounts of time on code only to find a space was making the whole thing not work.

I like the "hire a pro" attitude for those things which are beyond me but I think I can do most things myself.

I can fix many things on a car but first sign of transmission trouble, I am at the shop. I haven't been that deep into my website to need a pro just yet, I can still keep it running.

Of course if there is anything that isn't comfortable and not worth spending hours working on, someone out there can help.
Great post, I am sure I will need it as my blog progresses.

Yeah, I like to tinker and know how things works as well. There are times though that the time is better spent. Like you've said, when you get into that uncomfortable zone, leave it to someone else.

  • I love the analogy of driving a car and not having to be a mechanic. I would not hesitate [and haven't] taking my vehicle in for servicing I cannot do. Just like any business venture one needs to determine what they are best at, where they want to concentrate their efforts, and what can be left to someone else. I have not done this yet, but may one day. As it is I just spent several hours putting an author bio with an image on my site. Oh, and I screwed something up, but was able to resolve it without calling tech support. :)

  • I am to design what Stalin was to human rights and while I can code HTML the new fangled stuff makes the shutters come down so as and when I need some development done outside my sphere of expertise I won't hesitate to use a third party company or individual. As Mike says, it is commercial suicide to be offering a professional service when some aspects of your shop window look like garbage.

  • Good points there, Kevin.
Blogging from a business aspect means we have to be seriously operating like a business and businesses outsource when appropriate to do so.

  • For my blog, I don't outsource. For other projects, though, I use Elance and this a a great platform to find an expert at a reasonable rate ... and fast. I can imagine, though, if you are not an expert when it comes to coding and graphic design, I think outsourcing is your best option.
.-= Bart´s last blog ..Mind, Ego, And Meditation =-.
  • Hello Bart, and welcome!
I don't have any experience with resources at Elance, but have heard only good things about it. The important thing for bloggers is to recognize when help is needed and not waste valuable time on difficult tasks.

Thanks for your feedback and visit often. ;-)

  • If I could find someone at a good rate I would definitely hand blog layout and design to someone else. In fact now that I am a member of oDesk I am going to see if I can find someone, that fits my ever shrinking budget.

    Thanks for that nudge! :)

  • You bring up some good points here Jimi. I am currently still at the first stage, meaning I am still trying to do everything myself. There is a certain feeling of accomplishment that goes with completing a task and gaining a new skill. I have looked into outsourcing, got some quotes. But in the end I found the creative drive within myself to complete the task at hand. I am sure that one day that will not always be the case and I will be of sound mind to recognize this situation and will know when to outsource.

  • Hi Patty.
It is a balancing act of sorts, I love to tinker about myself, but when I look at some of the other projects I have planned, I would farm out some of the more time consuming issues so I can focus my attention on them.

When I first started blogging, I thought I had to do it all, coming from a programming background. I soon found myself not having time for the other things I wanted to get to.
.-= Jimi Jones´s last blog ..Should a Blogger Outsource? =-.
  • You're preaching to the converted here! For the first six months of my blogging career I did everything myself, and whilst I don't regret it, as I learned a lot, it was business suicide.

I've come to realize I'm a crap designer, a very slow coder and that other people can do jobs for me in no time at all to a much higher standard. It wasn't until I started putting a value on my time that I realized how much money I was throwing away. I remember spending 4 hours creating an E book cover that ended up looking like garbage, and then discovering someone who could do a fantastic job for $25 - madness!

    Now I focus on writing!
