Life can be many things, good, bad, and everything in between. We cruise along for a period of time while enjoying the fruits of our labor and the wonderful things around us. Then something happens to change the course of happiness and new challenges arise.

Yet another setback has befallen us and we’re left once again to wonder why. Why must we start again and look for another fresh start in life?

It could be a setback in our careers, a family situation or even the loss of someone near and dear. It could also be that a long followed routine has run it’s course and there now exists a desperate need for change because things have just not worked out as expected.

A fresh start in life, something new and different is what we want at this point. Hey, we all need to reinvent parts of our lives from time to time.

How we arrived at this point is not as important as how we move forward. There are certain things that we must do to insure that we move on to the next phase of our life, not with broken hopes and dreams but with a positive outlook.

What’s Next?

To make a fresh start in life we first have to get into the proper mindset. This will be easier for some than others but doable for all.  Below I’ve listed a few tips to help with the transition.

1. Leave the Past Behind

It is always difficult to move forward while looking back. Accept all of the past failures and defeats and prepare to move on. You already know how you arrived at this point in your life; concentrate on how to create the future.

It could be that what you were doing in the past was the right thing to do, but is no longer valid. Things change and life gets stale so you must adjust to those changes.

Creating the fresh start must be the new focus in order to recover from past events and circumstances. He or she that best makes these transitions are the ones that always seem to find success and happiness. Don’t feel bad, feel relieved, you have a new opportunity before you.

2. Make the Commitment

From this point forward, it’s all about commitment. Make a full commitment to implement some new routines and create new habits. Think this through, develop a plan and write everything down. Be certain to review and take action on your plan daily, avoiding many of the things that have failed you in the past as much as possible.

3. Know What You Really Want

Often we think we know what we want out of life, but it has to be defined beyond “being comfortable and debt-free” or something along those lines. Our goals should serve as the map to get us exactly where we want to go, then all we have to do is stick with it to the very end.

4. Forget About Perfection

There are times when we just try too hard to get it right in our quest for perfection. Forget about it. As a member of the human race, there is little if any true perfection and you’ll be chasing the near unachievable. Simply try to be better than most others by putting in the extra effort without getting bogged down in pursuit of making things perfect.

5. Become an Early Riser

There is no better time to get your day started and begin the process of working toward your goals than early in the morning. It’s an energetic and peaceful time which provides an opportunity to create a morning routine that sets the tone for the remainder of the day. Becoming an early riser has many benefits.

6. Get Rid of the Negativity in Your Life

Are there things in your life that are dragging you down?

Get rid of negativity, it’s a downer and serves you no good purpose. This can be tough but it is absolutely necessary. A fresh start is not about taking along the same things or people that may have contributed to past failures or unhappiness.

7. Do More by Doing Less

I saw that look on your face when you read this one. :-)

It’s simple, do more of what really produces good results for you and less of what doesn’t. Using this balancing technique will eventually eliminate the things that have a poor return on your invested time. This ties in nicely with #6 above.

Hate those outings with some of the negative “friends” from times past? Do less and less of them. Spend that time doing something more meaningful to your life.

8. Make It Fun

Creating a fresh start, new habits and charting a new course for your future will be lots of work and requires a ton of discipline. But injecting fun into the equation removes much of the sweat equity you’ll have to expend.

Analyze your situation and determine how you can make it fun while working hard to make your goals a reality.

Creating a fresh start in life can be a good thing and should not be viewed as the worst of situations, but rather, an opportunity to improve. We need a fresh start at times, a sort of mental cleansing that provides a much needed boost to our outlook on life.

Why stay in a situation that is just not working to your advantage? Take action and seize the moment, it’s your life after all.

I could list a couple dozen more ways to get a fresh start on life, but I want to hear from you.

What would you add to the list?

  1. Jimi,

This list shows what it takes to get a brand new start. And if you by the list one by one, getting on a new start is not easy as it seems.

I think the most important in the list is #2 – Commitment. It has something to do with consistency but it is even more difficult than that. Commitment will make you stand up when a fall is inevitable.

I may want to leave the past behind but I will carry on the lessons from the past.

      Hi Marlon.

I agree that commitment is extremely important, without that it’s already game over. None of this is easy, for sure. you have to really want the fresh start an take action, much in the same manner as everything else in life. What’s easy is falling back to the same old, same old.

Yes, leave the past behind but never forget the lessons, or you’ll learn them again. :-)

Upon the start of reading this, I wondered if I’m the inspiration for the post. I have enough sense to know that we all encounter setbacks.

Looking at #6 makes me realize that stinking thinking draws negativity so that can only come from within. That’s where I need to apply these next steps … in my mind.

One thing I’m doing to adjust is moving … doing something … anything … I’ve been sitting around and nursing my wounds. Wounds when compared to serious setbacks that others are facing and enduring are not even worthy of mentioning.

    Thanks, Jimi!

    • Jimi Jones says:

      Hey Kissie!

Negativity is all around us and it’s up to us to keep it from our inner being. Easier said than done on many occasions, but we just have to be determined to rise above it all. Stay focused and on the path that leads to our really important accomplishments.

You’re right, it starts within. We have to make up our minds to not be a part of certain elements of life.

I know a strong woman like you will continue your journey to success. Look at the dedication you’ve shown with your blogging, doing it your way, just Kissie style. We all get setbacks here and there. Make them as short-lived as possible and keep moving forward.

      Thanks for visiting, Kissie. :-)

  3. Jimi,

you listed some awesome ways to make a fresh start. It may sound a little trite but I believe every morning should in no way be treated as a fresh start. What happened yesterday no longer matters. Your accomplishments are thing of the past so are any missteps. All matters going forward is what you do from here on out.

Every single day is full of opportunity waiting to be seized, and you should never let the past hold you back from achieving

      I couldn’t agree more, Steve.

That’s the beauty of a new day, another opportunity to do better than the last time. They accuse people of having selective memories at times, but that can be a good thing. Remember the lessons from the past but forget about dwelling on the downside or being afraid of trying again. Just get it done.

Jimi, thanks. I’m a big fan of #6 also: get rid of negativity. I’m finding that one really has to work hard to have a positive attitude (heaven knows there’s plenty of stuff out there to give ya a negative one). I’m not talking about forcing oneself into a fake attitude, but the points you’ve mentioned do take effort, And constant monitoring, to make sure one stays on track. Thanks for reminding me.

About 3 years ago I lost my greatest value in life. This can leave one without any sense of purpose, as it did me. I struggled with depression for some time, but I have started to recover. Starting over is a difficult process, and many people don’t make it through life’s often cruel happenings. I don’t think one truly “heals” from great loss, but rather learns to live with the loss and move on – that is where I’m at anyway. I had to create a new sense of purpose. Thanks for the post Jimi, and watch that auto-tweeting. “-)

      Hey Chuck.

Sorry to hear about your tough loss and yes, it can be difficult to bounce back. I agree that we never fully heal but learn to cope and move on. I loss my parents and younger brother, all too soon, but somehow we pull it together and make the best of life.

Having a new mission in life to focus on helps, no doubt about that, but we never forget.

Hey Jimi! I was over at Kissie’s page this morning, reading about how she is working on getting out of her slump when I read that this post was a little push in the right direction for here, so I had to come check it out! I love how you are always so positive, that is the number one thing I strive for, before my dreams and relationships. Otherwise, everything else just gets dragged along in the mess of one’s negativity. Worry is the darkroom in developing negative thoughts, so chin up! : ) Thanks for the smiles

      Hi Jasmine.

Glad you came by from Kissie’s.
She’s a real friend that has a great personality.

Staying positive is what it’s all about. I think looking for the brighter side of things takes less energy and produces better results than getting down in the weeds of negative thinking.

“Worry is the darkroom in developing negative thoughts” I like that, well said. :-)

Starting a fresh start means that you have made a decission to go forward and not looking back. Start with a well made of mind realizing that quitting is not an option, being committed. Must think positive and not negative, connecting with positive people. I spoke positive words every morning I got up. I asked God and the Holy Spirit to help me make it through each day.
