Social Media Branding – Tips To Break From The Crowd

by Jimi Jones

Social media branding is an extremely important process for online businesses and those seeking pro blogger status. Without this, your efforts to gain recognition will be difficult.

In your efforts to build an easily recognizable brand, one that will stand out from the ever increasing and ambitious crowd, you’ll need to develop an overall social media branding strategy, a methodical approach that leads to that result.

Now before going further, I must point out that social media branding is not for everyone and I will address that in an upcoming article. But for those that really need to make this happen, let’s continue.

The use of social media sites and tools provides you with the power to reach tens of thousands of people with the click of a mouse. The problem is this, so can everyone else who is using social media tools.

So what can you do to establish your brand and stand out from the crowd?

I think it is as simple as returning to a long-standing, tried and true technique – word of mouth advertising.

You have to give people a reason to talk about you or your brand. You need something to get the masses to do the advertising work.

The fact that you may spend 10 hours daily self promoting and telling everyone what a great product or service you have is just not going to get the job done. You have to do the hard work behind the scenes that give people a reason to promote what you are doing or what you are about.

So what’s the secret?

That’s just it, there is no secret it is just a matter of utilizing common sense approaches to building your brand.

Here are a few suggestions to prepare yourself for implementing a strategy:

  • Create lots of good content. The content you produce and provide to your readers will define you and your brand. It tells the world what you represent. You should also consider the manner in which the content is constructed and delivered. Write in conversational tones, avoiding the lecture type approach that always brings on the brain’s sleep cycle. To avoid an appearance of a thin resume’, be sure that your site has plenty of content related to your brand.
  • Create an awesome product or service. Perform market research to see what others in your niche are offering, then offer a better product or service by providing more. If 5 companies are offering a similar product, be sure that yours stands out above what they have on the market.
  • Make your choices carefully. This is the beauty of the online life, you choose your topic and brand by selecting something that relates to your passion. Working within your own viewpoints and being yourself is a recipe for a great start. Some see success in others and try to replicate but this can work against you if you are inauthentic, so being yourself is critical. Always work your passion.
  • Expand your social media footprint. As in real life, you will not expand your network by staying in the neighborhood where you grew up. You have to get out there and increase the size of your social footprint. You have to establish some outposts that lead back to your brand.  Many are shy by nature and may find this a little difficult initially, but you will have to overcome internet stage-fright and get on with the business of building your brand. To help with this, join a group with people that you can relate to and interact with them regularly. Be socially active and participate in discussions.
  • Remain focused. Your goal is to break from the crowd and stand out as an independent brand that is both valued and respected. This will not occur overnight, so be patient, authentic and consistent in all you do. Longevity is one of the cornerstones to success so settle in and plan for the long haul.

Conclusion

A social media strategy must be employed to successfully elevate your brand and I will begin a series of post on that very topic in the near future. Remember, breaking from a crowded field will be both paced and methodical but can be accomplished by following a plan.

Do you have a social media strategy or plan in place today?

I would not be overly concerned about that if not, but it is something that you will eventually have to address to gain that separation, avoiding the label of being just another business or blogger.

Now here is what you can do right now, today…

  • Hello Rohit and welcome!
With so many bloggers online today, you have to do a little something different to avoid being lost in the mix. This can sometimes be tough to pull off, it is a balancing act of sorts. One does not want to go overboard but find something that makes them different from most.

  • At times it's very hard to stand out - that's when I rely on the many experiences in my life to make my point. That way, I can still talk about the same topics others, but I can add my own flavor to it because no one has lived my life.

  • That's a very good point, Kiesha. Adding your personality and own experiences are definitely fine methods for enhancing your brand.

People like stories and situations they can relate to, and they want to know who they are considering doing business with.
It's much easier to conduct business with someone you feel you have a connection with and have built some trust in.

  • Great points Jimi.

I've found services like DandyID.org are great places to track all of your social media outlets and remind yourself of all the places you've registered (I always forget the smaller ones like some of the Twitter spin-offs).

On that note, I also think it is important not to spread yourself too thin by joining too many and then not having the time to be actively involved and engaged with your audience / community.

A good point, 'If 5 companies are offering a similar product, be sure that yours stands out above what they have on the market...' this is also a good way to spot if there are any gaps in their products that you can then target with your offering (such as a particular demographic that they fail to market to, etc).

  • Great feedback, Karl.
DandyID.org is one I am not familiar with, may take a look at that. One thing is certain, you need something to help you remember all of these places. :-)

I have often talked about avoiding too many outpost to maintain. Makes you look less than professional when you have too many stagnant sites around.

    Thanks for your comment, man.

  • 'I have often talked about avoiding too many outpost to maintain. Makes you look less than professional when you have too many stagnant sites around.'... absolutely Jimi. I've been guilty of this (a long time ago) and now only concentrate on those places that give me the most return on my time, be that making new connections, generating traffic etc.

  • I have definitely neglected the majority of my social networking opportunities. I have followers and fans etc, but I need to interact with them more. Simply allowing auto updates doesn't cut it.

Great post..lots of fodder for follow-up post here. ;)

As for standing out, ummm.. I would say finding your own voice and being yourself.
  • Definitely have to be yourself or face failure for sure. But I think you also have to add just a little something extra. Determining what that may be is the challenge, depending on one's niche, style, etc.
  • Hey Jimi,
Currently I'm only using Twitter and Facebook plus my blog for social media branding. In someways I don't need to spread myself too thin. Should I be doing more?

  • I think you hit on a great point, not to spread yourself beyond what you can reasonably handle. Out of date profiles leave a bad impression. Having said that, it's a good branding technique to have a presence in many places. Boils down to a balancing act.

  • Creating a lot of great content is a great point, expanding your social footprint is great too.

Being social doesn't just mean sticking to twitter, it means getting in the mixer on forums, contributing to great posts like this, visiting other sites and doing the same, helping others, replying to everything that comes your way.

It's at this point you start to stand out.

  • I think for those of us who live online anyway, we're not going to break from the crowd with social media. We're all doing it.

But there's a huge opportunity for conventional businesses to do so.
.-= Mike CJ´s last blog ..A guest post. On guest posting. =-.
  • I think there will always be those who do this better than others and will break from the crowd because of their above average brand. Everyone cannot remain equal and in a competitive environment there must be some degree of separation to be more successful than others.

  • As ever some salient points for beginners and painful reminders for some more experienced bloggers. Collaboration and focus are so important because people think they can just sit there, type their blog and the world comes beating a path to their door. Doesn't happen that way.

Another thing you point out as important is common sense. In the UK we call this "nous" and I have employed people with obvious nous over those with a string of degrees because the former I could instruct quickly, they would pick it up and run with it. The latter need spoon feeding for ages, sorry, just don't have the time to be a nanny.

  • Common sense is often in short supply. Had some similar experiences during the corporate days. Leaves you shaking your head at times because the folks are really intelligent so you just wonder what happened.

Of course, I've had my moments as well. :-)
