I’m a reasonable guy and I understand marketing and the need for it as well as anyone, but at some point you just have to say enough.
No, there was no one particular ad, email or Tweet that has shoved me beyond my point of tolerance, it’s just that in the grand scheme of things most of this “stuff” does nothing to advance my business agenda.
Truth be told, much of this is really in my way. Why am I allowing all of this to clutter my digital world when there is little to no interest in most of it?
The answer: I’m not!
I want quality over quantity and I have absolutely no fear of missing the next big thing that comes down the pike. Products and offers are like subway trains, miss one and another will be along shortly.
Now understand, I am not anti-product, anti-service or any of that. I’ll be pitching my own stuff as well, but right now I am getting a jump on Spring cleaning. I need less clutter in my life so I can fully concentrate on upcoming projects that are hugely important to both me and my readers.
I hate to say it, but even some folks that I have held in high regard have become a bit spammy of late, so sorry pal, nothing personal but we just can’t roll like that any longer. Jimi’s on a mission.
I am taking the corporate approach to email, I’m downsizing. This will keep me from being spread too thinly, allowing me to spend more quality time on emails and sites that really mean a lot to me.
Sometimes I go through my email (nicely filtered now by the way – THANKS Antti) and see someone that I’ve not touched bases with for a period of time and feel a little poorly about that. Sure we’ve reconnected but we should have stayed connected.
And how about the Friends and Buddies (don’t like that FAN tag) on Facebook? When was the last time you really connected with some of them? I mean REALLY connected.
Many of these people became friends and buddies long ago, but often we pass like ships in the night. They see me, I see them and a quick shout out here and there is exchanged but we need to all slow this train down a little.
In my recent survey results someone wanted to know how we could gain more time to work on our blogs and build a brand. Since there is no brand without some sort of relationship, I am leading by example and making more time of my own.
You see, it’s great to give advice and to help others solve their issues, but you had better solve your own issues as well. We can easily get caught up in the digital world, moving along in nanoseconds and missing all of those who helped position you where you are today.
So I am unsubscribing like crazy, and maybe I will lose some subscribers as well by taking this stance, but it’s all good.
Spring cleaning has begun.
Keep Blogging!

Why I Am Unsubscribing Like Crazy | Jimi Jones Dot Com…
…there was no one particular ad, email or Tweet that has shoved me beyond my point of tolerance, it’s just that in the grand scheme…
I bare bones my lists about once a month, unsubscribing is the only way to keep what’s coming in relevant and fresh.
Hi Jimi!
.-= Ms. Freeman´s last blog ..Rested, Renewed, and Blogging from a Remote Base Camp (Temporarily) =-.
Now my day is complete!
Hey Ms. Freeman – how are you doing? Been thinking about you and wondered when you may return. It’s good to see you.
I’ve been getting emails at an increasing rate and in all honesty, I’m not interested in the majority of that stuff. Got plans and those items just don’t fit in.
Great to have you back, friend.

I tend to do much the same thing every few months – it just gets too much otherwise! About due for another one actually, maybe in a few days (it’s a huge task by now)…
Anyway, hope that frees up some of your time!
Thanks Heather!
By unsubscribing that will reduce my traffic to the inbox. I use Gmail, so space is not an issue, I’ve just grown weary of even looking at so much.

Know the one
gmail’s awesome that way… but sometimes you just want less!

True that!

I absolutely wholeheartedly feel you on this one (but, please, don’t unsubscribe me
– there is a point where it’s just too much and quality begins to suffer. Honestly, the minute I find myself skimming a blog post – I know it’s time to re-evaluate, if I go a week and can’t manage to get through an entire post with some level of interest, it’s time to disconnect.
I don’t know how to represent that annoying sound you hear when the phone has been left off the hook too long, but it usually follows this sentence: “if you’d like to make a call, please hang up…” – you know the rest.

LOL – I know that annoying sound all too well.
We have to go through these purges every so often, good for regaining energy and changing the scenery so to speak.
I couldn’t find your unsubscribe link so I guess we’ll just have to tough it out.
Just kidding, you’re good peeps, good to have you around.
Keep them great post going over there!

Jimi,
I feel you! I am doing a little spring cleaing myself. Sometimes, we gotta do what we gotta do! It makes things a lot easier.
.-= Evelyn´s last blog ..Don’t Put Anyone On A Pedestal =-.
Thanks, Evelyn.
I’m glad I’m not the only one spring cleaning.
We do have to do what’s necessary, I agree.

Yes, when I first started I subscribed like crazy to anything and everything. Now I battle to even keep up with those that I regard as important.
You are absolutely so correct, (If that is even good English). But I think the point is that to unclutter is good. We see so many programs of TV about uncluttering your house, your lifestyle etc. Blogs and RSS should not be any different.
.-= Robert Bravery´s last blog ..Pay it forward =-.
Good point, Robert. Why should blogging be any different than the rest of our lives. Get rid of the clutter and stay organized.

Hi Jimi.
Good call here. The people that do this might seem a certain way at first, and then they have much more energy to give. It is a smart move. We can go through days where we are just overwhelmed by various items, or we can go through days full of vigor because we are in control of our input and output. It makes a large difference.
Sometimes when I want more energy, I just delete stuff like files, or desktop material on the windows desktop, or something from an internet application, or so on. It tends to work.

Hey Armen!
Good to see you, bud.
You are correct about how clearing things out makes a difference in your energy and output. Often we find out that a lot of the stuff we end up sorting through was really just not that important anyhow.

That’s why I’m using Yahoo Mail as my recycle workshop of those online correspondence. One thing is good with yahoo is that you can filter them out to a separate folder and they never show in inbox. In case of Gmail, whether you apply labels or create filter, the mail is counted in inbox.
I use Gmail for personal and more important type of correspondance. Yahoo mail for subscribing and connecting with blogging world. Hotmail to accept all sort of spam mails, Hehe!
.-= Suresh Khanal´s last blog ..Domain Names – Longer the better =-.
Hi Suresh.
I have several Gmail accounts for various purposes and use the filtering system to stay organized, but you are correct, Gmail does count everything in the inbox.
I have two Yahoo accts as well from older blogs and a website.
One thing that has annoyed me a bit is that Captcha feature. I even have to use it to forward an email, a little overkill if you ask me, since I have signed in and all. But hey, it’s free so I should not complain too much.
Never used Hotmail, how is it?

Update: Gmail has a bypass the inbox feature now which filters straight into the label file.
