In the previous post I talked about the new Google Apps Marketplace. I became curious about the many apps that they have developed over the years, so I revisited Google Apps with an eye toward tools that may be underutilized or even overlooked.

But before my visit I was going through my mail and suddenly wondered, how many people are there that are not taking advantage of the power of Gmail?

This is one of the best email tools available with more than ample storage and all for free. I recalled a post I wrote some time ago about how I use Gmail for backing up my databases, which you can find here.

If you are still performing manual back-ups, you may want to consider the quick and easy automation method of that post.

But what else can you do with Gmail?

You can become a Ninja by receiving free tips from Google delivered to your inbox. Just choose your level of frequency and enjoy the quick tips.

If you do not have a Gmail account, one can be obtained by going here and creating one.

What about your existing email account(s) that you likely do not want to abandon?

Easy fix, simply use Gmail’s POP3 import function where you can pull in messages from up to five other accounts. Inside of the Gmail admin area click on the “Settings” link in the upper right hand corner and you will end up on a page similar to this (depending on your theme of course).

Clicking the Accounts and Import tab you can see how easily you can add other POP3 accounts, no matter who the service provider is. Just pull them into Gmail.

To enter the other email addresses, simply click the Add POP3 email account button and enter the information. Done deal!

Concerned about storage space? No worries, a look at the image above shows that I have used 440MB in this particular account, a mere 5%, and I have over 6000 emails filed under a host of labels.

Gmail is very powerful and a handy tool with great flexibility, a plus for any business or personal situation.

Keep Blogging!

  1. Hi Jimi! My first time here. Nice post you have here about Gmail. One thing I like about it compared to other email services is that my Gmail accounts never seem to get spammed. I’m not really sure if Google’s technology is better than the rest or if it’s just because I’m careful at using my accounts when register on different sites. Anyway, keep them good tips coming. =)

    Peace and respect,
    Ryhen

      Hello Ryhen and welcome!
I’m happy to have you visit anytime.
Gmail is an awesome email service, but not immune to the pesky spammers. :-)

I have several accounts but my main one gets spam at the rate of about a dozen or so weekly, which is really not bad at all considering. You may have a point about Google’s technology, Gmail does get less spam than other accounts I have used.

We’ll keep the tips flowing, thanks for visiting.

Jimi, what scared me the other week was that I clicked on the labs tab and saw what the Gmail team had been up to! Because I normally use Thunderbird for email I rarely drop by the Gmail web interface and was amazed at the progress and developments going on in there. The Back To Beta function had me LMAO!
